Understanding BMI

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women. While BMI is not a perfect indicator of health (muscle weighs more than fat, for example), it's a useful screening tool to identify potential weight-related health issues.

The BMI formula divides your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared (kg/m²). A BMI of 18.5–24.9 is generally considered healthy, while values outside this range may indicate health risks.

Limitations of BMI

  • Muscle mass: Athletes may have high BMI despite being fit
  • Age: BMI doesn't account for age-related body composition changes
  • Bone density: Doesn't differentiate between bone, muscle, and fat
  • Individual variation: Doesn't consider individual genetic factors

What Your BMI Means

Underweight (BMI < 18.5)

May be associated with nutritional deficiencies. Consider consulting a healthcare provider.

Normal Weight (BMI 18.5–24.9)

Associated with lower health risks. Maintain with balanced diet and exercise.

Overweight (BMI 25–29.9)

May increase health risks. Consider lifestyle changes and professional guidance.

Obese (BMI ≥ 30)

Associated with increased health risks. Consult with a healthcare provider.
